新潟在住でない方は、ジャズストリートとは？と思った方もいらっしゃると思いますので、ちょっと説明します。

50年ほど前になりますが、1964年6月16日に新潟地震がありました。その際に有名なジャズミュージシャンであるデュークエリントンが日本で来日公演中だったのですが、次に予定していたハワイ公演をキャンセルし、東京で「新潟地震救済資金募集・特別コンサート」を開催。全収益金96万円（現在の2000万円相当）を新潟市に寄贈しました。2年後再び来日したデュークエリントンに新潟市は「国際親善名誉市民」の称号を贈呈。震災復興後の1970年1月には新潟公演も実現し、多くの市民を感動させると共に、新潟市の歴史に深くその名を刻む事になりました。（舟田敏（ジャズ研究家）の文章から抜粋させて頂きました。）

ジャズストリートの事は前から知っていたのですが、100-140組のバンドが出演し、何時に何処の会場で演奏する事になるのかも分からないなんて、とエントリーを躊躇してばかり。そんな中、ボーカルの仁多見悦子さんとふくまこづえさんにお誘い頂き、ジャズストリート初参加となりました。

最初はKAWAI音楽教室新潟センターコモドホールという所で、ボーカルの仁多見悦子さんと演奏。SHIGERU KAWAIというピアノのモデルが15年前位から出ているそうで、びっくりするほど良かったです。もうリハーサルからうっとりでした。もっとこの音を生かす演奏が出来たらと思いました。

ずっとスタインウェイ、スタインウェイとばかり考えていたのですがもっと視野を広げるべきだったんだな。

仁多見さんは天使の歌声という感じで特にDanny Boyは歌声が綺麗に宙に舞っている感じでこの素晴らしいピアノの音と絡ませてどうやってお客さんに運べるかなー。と考えてました。

その後A７でふくまこづえさんと萩原ケイさんとトリオ。混んでいるバス状態で立ち見のお客さんがいる中、ベースレスのギタートリオで頑張りましたが難しかった。やっぱり左手が思うように動かない泣。左手が全てだ。とはあるジャズピアニストの言葉で本当そのとうりかも。

その後こんな機会はない！とやる気を出してあちこち回ってきました。外は雪吹雪。

ずっと聴きたいと思っていた方々の演奏が聴けて大満足でした。本当新潟ってすごいんだな。と改めて思いました。ジャズの層が厚い。音楽がもっと良くなれる環境だと再確認です。がんばります。

帰りは古町から新潟駅まで雪の中歩きました。道は凍っていて何度も転びそうになりましたが、心は満ちていて良い一日でした。

There is a very good Jazz event in Niigata called, JAZZ STREET.
About 50 years ago, Niigata city had a big earthquake in June 1964.  Duke Ellington, the famous jazz player and the bandleader of his Jazz orchestra heard the news.  He was in Japan touring.  He cancelled his next tour in Hawaii, extended his stay in Japan and hold a Benefit concert in Tokyo to help raise money for the earthquake.  2 years later in 1966, Mayor Kotaro Watanabe in Niigata made him a honorary citizen of Niigata prefecture.

"The Niigata jazz street" which is held in Summer and Winter every year.  To thank his support to Niigata city, summer is held as "Duke Ellington memorial".

I knew about this event but never had a gut to enter myself.  About 100-140 group applied for it.  Not only jazz clubs and music halls, but also bars and restaurants bring musicians and play jazz all day from 12:00-23:00.  You never know where and what time you are going to be scheduled to play.  It all depends on the Jazz street committee.  It is a lot to think about.

While I continue considering... Two vocalists asked me if I am available to play for Jazz street this year.  I made my debut for Jazz street.

Ms. Nitami and I performed in "Comodo hall" (Comodo means Comfortably in music term), in Kawai center. 

The famous piano maker, Kawai has a model called "SHIGERU KAWAI" which I did not know about and it was there at the hall.  When I touched it, I was shocked by its touch and beautiful sound!!!

I was a big fun of Stainways, but! I should have researched more. It was really a great piano.  I would like to have one for myself if I were rich!

Ms. Nitami has a beautiful soprano voice.  When she sang, "Danny boy", I felt like I was in church listening hymns.  I tried my best to accompany her voice to reach the audience in the best way. 

The next place was the jazz club called A7 for the trio performance with Kozue Fukuma (vocal) and Kei Hagiwara (guitar).  
A7 was packed! There were some people standing, and it looks like a crowded bus at the rush hour.  The trio was without the bassist.  It is challenging for me to play bass line almost all the time.  My left hand does not work the way I wanted!!!
"Left hand is everything" by a famous jazz pianist and teacher who I took a few lessons in NY.  I agree with you Mr. W!

The weather report yesterday said about the snow storm.  The snow and strong wind had started around the afternoon.  But I could not miss this opportunity.  After all, I went to 4 different places to listen to

I was content with their music, and I realized that my hometown is great!  We have such wide age range of Jazz musicians! I am lucky to be here and got really inspired by them!

My friend and I decided to walk home from Furumachi to Niigata station. (I thank my friend, Manie chan for walking with me). The street turned ice, and I was about to fall down so many times but I was very happy for the day.  

I would like to thank Ms. Nitami and Ms. Kozue Fukuma to give this wonderful opportunity to take a part of Jazz street.  Arigatou gozaimasu.

2014年最後のライブ＠スワン/My last gig in 2014 at Swan in Niigata

2014年最後のライブはスワンで越智巌さんのライブでした。

強力男子と私という編成だったのですが、本当皆さんかっこ良くて音楽やっていて良かったなと思い、2015年へ向けての活力となりました。

実は2013年の最後のライブで大失敗をしてしまい心折れていて、2014年の目標は、緊張しない事。でした。

精神面、メンタルタフネスがどんなに大事かというのはどんな分野でも言える事だと思いますが、音楽に置いてもこれは本当大事だと毎回痛感させられます。

そしてもう１つはやはり音楽は準備ではないという事。特にジャズはその場での即興で作られる音楽だという事。越智さんのエネルギーがスゴくてそれに乗せられました。

ドラムスの本間さんが誘って下さったのですが、本当！にありがとうございました。

これからも頑張ります。

My last gig in 2014 was "Iwao Ochi quartet" at Swan in Niigata.

These were very strong guys (means really talented) and me on the side:))  They were so great and I felt very fortunate to play music with such talented musicians.  This gig made me want to work harder for next year 2015.  

I made a huge mistake at my last concert in 2013, and my heart was broken.  I was very nervous at the concert and my new years resolution for 2014 was to work on my mental toughness.  

I read several books but I could really say that experience was everything.  Compare to the previous year, I played twice more gigs in 2014.  I would say that I got used to play in front of people a bit more.  But preparation and everyday practice are also very important, too.

Mental toughness is very important in almost all fields, but I felt it keenly in music.  

I also have to say that music is not about preparation.  Especially Jazz is all about improvisation.  Mr. Ochi really improvised for the moment.  I felt he brought me another level of improvisation.

Mr. Honma, the drummer asked me to play for this gig.  I can't thank enough for him!  Thank you Honma san!

I hope to play again with them.
